"Gaelic is an ancient Celtic language of Scotland. The Endangered Languages Project lists Gaelic's status as ""threatened"", with ""20,000 to 30,000 active users"". UNESCO classifies Gaelic as ""definitely endangered"". There are no known living monolingual Gaelic speakers.
There are some parts of Scotland, largely in the Highlands and Islands, where Gaelic is still the primary language of communication and is the language of choice in both primary and high schools. Around half of Scotland's local authority areas have at least one school where Gaelic is the primary language."
